A Guide to Multiple Sclerosis

A Guide to Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (or MS) will affect the patientís brain and spinal cord. The early symptoms of MS can include weakness, tingling, numbness, blurred vision, cognitive problems such as trouble thinking, stiffness in the muscles, and urinary problems. Thankfully, there are treatments that can relieve these symptoms and even delay the progression of the disease.

The science behind MS is that it causes demyelination, which disrupts the myelin that insulates and protects the bodyís nerve cells in the spinal nerves and brain cells. It is widely considered to be an autoimmune disease. Women are two to three times more at risk than men. Women age 15-60 years old are most at risk.

If you experience any of the above symptoms it is always best to be safe than sorry and consult your doctor for a diagnosis and prognosis. You should also consult your doctor about the following tips.

Treatment Options:

There are many treatment options available for MS. Many of which include:

-Interferon injections

-Glatiramer acetate

-Dimethyl fumarate

Mobility aids can also be very beneficial to patients with MS such as foot orthotics and braces for drop foot. These can help with mobility, muscle fatigue, and proper weight displacement while walking. Ankle braces have also been found to be useful for patients having trouble with going up and down stairs. Canes are very useful when one leg is weaker than the other, assisting getting up from a seated position, or balance problems. Make sure to hold the cane on the stronger side of the body.

Walkers can also be extremely useful for balance problems if a cane does not provide enough support. For more extreme situations, a wheelchair or scooter is recommended.
